Adam Smiddy’s Story
On 6 August, 2006 Adam Smiddy passed away after a short battle against an aggressive melanoma. Adam was just 26 years of age and in the prime of his life.
Six months prior, Adam had discovered a small lump in his groin, and after a biopsy, it turned out to be a malignant melanoma. He had immediate surgery to remove the lump and his lymph glands. Gradually over a six month period Adam’s health and fitness had started to return, sadly however, it was not to be.After discovering the cancer had spread to his vital organs Adam passed away just over three weeks later. He was in hospital for only eight days. His courage during that time was inspiring. Not one word of self pity—his only concern was for the welfare of his family and friends. The day before he passed Adam requested that only family were admitted to his room. He wanted his friends to remember him as he was prior to the cancer—a happy, healthy and vibrant human being, who was always smiling—never seeming to have a care in the world.
Adam's last name, Smiddy, is what all his friends affectionately called him. Smiddy was a talented triathlete, a devoted physiotherapist, a son that his parents David and Maria were so very proud of, and a brother to Paul, who looked up to and admired his big brother Adam.
"To us, his friends, he was our buddy, our pal, our cobber, our mate! Smiddy will always be special in our hearts for reasons only those close to him can know. Smiddy was one of those rare breed of humans that had not a bad word to say about anyone and not an enemy in the world. He loved life with a passion and he loved his family and friends more. To have Smiddy as your friend you could count yourself blessed. I miss my mate Smiddy."
