Recently, I had the amazing privilege of introducing some of our most dedicated supporters to the people on the ground; the Mater Research team who are turning funding into results.
When you visit the Research institute at South Brisbane, you can’t help but be inspired. The researchers are not only driven to prevent and treat cancer; they are incredibly humbled to meet the people in the community, our Smiddy Riders, who support their research.
When arriving we were greeted by Associate Professor John Hooper, Principal Research Fellow of the Cancer Biology Group at Mater Research. John is a wealth of knowledge and you couldn’t meet a nicer guy. He also has a deep seeded appreciation of Smiddy Riders, the effort that they put in on (and off the bike) and all our donors and how much they achieve.
John’s team are currently pushing the boundaries of medical research and investigating how to prime a person’s immune system to fight cancer, beating cancer cells at their own game by blocking their defences and targeting cancer cells that have spread to the bone.
Smiddy Rider Lisa, whose mum has had a long battle with Melanoma, attended the tour. On the day she made a statement that summed up how we all feel.
“They just need to find a cure, it can’t go on like this,” she said.
I couldn’t agree more.
Thank you to all the people in the labs, on the bike and online who are supporting our journey.
